How to Prepare Your Home Before the House Cleaners Arrive

A few minutes of prep means your cleaners spend their time on cleaning, not on moving clutter. Here is what helps — and what doesn't matter.

You do not need to clean before the cleaners come. But a few minutes of preparation means the time you are paying for goes into actual cleaning — and the result is noticeably better. Here are the steps that make the biggest difference.

1. Pick up clutter from floors and counters

Cleaners clean surfaces; they cannot clean under piles. Clothes on the floor, toys, mail on the counter and dishes in the sink all take time to work around. A ten-minute pickup makes every room faster and more thorough.

2. Put away valuables and sensitive papers

Professional cleaners are vetted, but it is simply good practice to put jewelry, cash, medication and personal documents in a drawer before any service visit. It also means nothing important gets moved while surfaces are being cleaned.

3. Tell us your priorities

If the kitchen matters most this week, or a guest room needs attention before visitors arrive, say so. A short note at the start of each visit helps the team focus where it counts.

4. Mention fragile or special surfaces

Natural stone countertops, unsealed wood, antique furniture and specialty finishes may need specific products. Point them out on the first visit so the right method is used every time.

5. Plan for your pets

Let us know about pets in advance. Some are happy to supervise; others are calmer in a closed room or out for a walk. Either way, mention any areas with heavy pet hair.

6. Sort out access

You do not need to be home. Many clients share a door code, a lockbox or a key. Just confirm parking, gate codes and alarm instructions ahead of time so the team can start on schedule.

7. Leave the sink empty if you can

Washing a full sink of dishes uses time that could go to the rest of the kitchen. If you can load the dishwasher before the visit, the counters, stovetop and sink get more attention.

8. Tell us about eco-friendly preferences

If anyone in your home prefers fragrance-free or plant-based products, mention it when you book. Our eco-friendly cleaning option is available on request.

What you don't need to do

  • Pre-clean. That is what you are hiring us for.
  • Provide supplies or equipment. Our team brings everything needed.
  • Stay home. Most clients are at work or out during the visit.
