The Airbnb Turnover Cleaning Checklist for Bay Area Hosts
Cleanliness is the review category guests notice first. This checklist covers every step between check-out and the next check-in.

For short-term rental hosts, cleanliness is not just one review category among many — it shapes how guests feel about everything else. A single hair in the shower can cost you a star. This checklist is the same structure professional turnover teams use, so nothing gets missed between one guest and the next.
Step 1: Strip, start and inspect
- Open windows to air out the space.
- Strip all beds and collect used towels; start the first laundry load right away.
- Walk every room and note damage, missing items or anything left behind. Take photos — Airbnb and VRBO damage claims depend on them.
- Collect all trash and recycling, including from bathroom bins.
Step 2: Kitchen
- Run, empty and put away the dishwasher; check cabinets for dirty dishes put away by mistake.
- Clear out guest food from the refrigerator and wipe shelves.
- Clean the stovetop, microwave inside and out, and small appliances such as the coffee maker and toaster.
- Wipe counters, backsplash, cabinet fronts and handles.
- Clean and shine the sink and faucet.
Step 3: Bathrooms
- Clean and disinfect toilet, shower, tub and sink.
- Remove every hair from the shower, drain, floor and counter — guests notice this first.
- Polish mirrors and glass shower doors.
- Replace towels, bath mat and toilet paper; leave a spare roll.
Step 4: Bedrooms
- Make beds with fresh linens, hotel-tight, with pillows arranged the same way every time.
- Check under the beds and inside drawers and closets for forgotten items.
- Dust nightstands, lamps, headboards and surfaces.
- Check that hangers, extra blankets and pillows are in place.
Step 5: Living areas and floors
- Dust surfaces, TV, remotes and decor; disinfect remotes and light switches.
- Fluff and arrange cushions and throws.
- Vacuum carpets and upholstery; mop hard floors last.
Step 6: Restock
Keep a written par list for each property so restocking is a checklist, not a memory test. Common items include toilet paper, paper towels, soap and shampoo, dish soap and dishwasher pods, trash bags, coffee and tea, and basic cooking supplies like salt, pepper and oil.
Step 7: The final walk-through
- Look at each room from the doorway, the way a guest first sees it.
- Check for smells; take out any trash created during the clean.
- Set the thermostat, lights and blinds to your standard welcome settings.
- Take photos of the finished space to document its condition for the next guest.
- Lock up and update your cleaning log or host app.
Planning for tight turnover windows
Same-day turnovers leave little room for error. The hosts who rarely have problems do three things: they share their calendar with their cleaner in advance, they keep a full set of spare linens on site so laundry is never the bottleneck, and they work with the same team every time, so the property's routine is already known.
Short-term rental rules vary by city across the Bay Area, so check your city's registration and occupancy requirements as part of running your listing.
